MRCS Vs FRCS;A comparative Analysis

Are you looking to build a career in surgery? If yes, MRCS and FRCS are two perfect options that can open up a world of opportunities for you. Here, we are discussing the major similarities and differences between MRCS and FRCS.

What is MRCS?

MRCS is the certification of Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. This qualification opens up opportunities to work as surgical trainees in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The MRCS examination is divided into two parts, namely MRCS Part A (Written) and MRCS Part B (OSCE).

The MRCS Part A exam is a five-hour exam given in two parts, 3 hours and 2 hours on the same day. This multiple-choice question exam is in the form of a single best answer. The 3-hour exam is based on the applied basic sciences subject, while the 2-hour exam is based on the general principles of surgery.

The MRCS Part B (OSCE) exam is a practical assessment of your knowledge of surgical practice. The main subjects covered are anatomy, pathology, clinical procedures, critical care, and patient management, as well as history, communication, and clinical examination.

What is FRCS?

FRCS is a certification of Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. It is an examination given by medical professionals to be able to practice in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The FRCS examination has written, oral, and clinical parts that need to be cleared to gain the fellowship of FRCS.

The written part of the examination consists of multiple-choice questions, and the oral part is a viva voce given to the examiner in the surgical subjects. The last clinical part is about testing the skills and knowledge the candidate holds about clinic management. You are required to know about diagnostics, different clinical conditions, treatment modalities, and medical emergencies.

Successful completion of MRCS or FRCS gets you the membership or fellowship of the four Royal Surgical Colleges of Ireland and the United Kingdom. Every qualification is hard work and another opportunity to better your skills in life.
