MRCS Part B – Exam Pattern & Fees

Part B exam will have 18 stations, with each station consisting of a practical task for the candidate to complete.
Candidates will be tested on four broad domains.

Anatomy and surgical pathology
Applied surgical science and critical care
Clinical and procedural skills
Communication skills.

The candidates will get 10 minutes in each station, including 1 minute to read the instructions before entering the OSCE room. The candidate’s ability to be decisive and deduce or process information quickly is tested.

In addition to it, there could be one or more preparatory stations before the actual test station with patient records or detailed instructions on which the candidate will be tested in the following actual station. There will be few rest stations in between for the candidate to relax amidst the rigorous examination.

The eligibility criteria for the MRCS exam are not complex. However, the candidate needs to know some specific things to prepare and complete the exam successfully.

Though surgical experience is not mandatory to apply for the exam, candidates with surgical training or those who worked in the surgical department perform well in the exams compared to others who haven’t started surgical training because most of the stations in part B replicate common clinical scenarios like communication to a patient/ colleague.

Exam Fees – £ 997.00
